Tasking tutorial

Read this tutorial if you are looking for a step-by-step guide on how to create a satellite tasking order, monitor its status and get data delivered from start to finish.

In this guide, you will learn how to:

  1. Select a contract to use for your order
  2. Select a tasking product that better fits your use case
  3. Provide order parameters and run feasibility checks for a standard priority tasking order
  4. Select a satellite pass for an assured priority tasking order
  5. Retrieve the price of the order and place a tasking order
  6. Monitor an order’s status
  7. Receive the data

Dashboard contract selection

The tasking flow starts with selecting a contract that provides you access to the tasking section of the SatVu platform. More information about what the contract includes is available under Accessing SatVu platform.

You can see all your available contracts on the Dashboard page. Every contract is defined by its name and unique identifier.

Once you click on “Tasking →”, the web app opens a tasking page. You can also choose which exact tasking product you want to have access to. You will see the selected contract on any page within the web app.

Data ordering

When you open the Tasking tab, you will see the map interface and a sidebar with tasking order parameters. Those parameters differ for standard priority and assured priority tasking products. You can switch between tasking products by clicking on the icon on the left side of the sidebar.

Standard priority tasking product

The process of creating a standard priority tasking product consists of the following steps:

  1. Set up tasking parameters
  2. Run a feasibility study and retrieve the price
  3. Place an order

Setting up tasking parameters

The standard priority product has a sidebar with a selection of tasking parameters and a map interface. The map enables you to browse to the desired location of the tasking order. Alternatively, you can use the geocoding component and type an address in the top left input field. A tasking order requires a point geometry, so you will need to draw the point of interest. For that, hover on the pencil icon and select the point geometry object.

You can use the sidebar to specify the time frame, the imagery mode, maximum cloud coverage and a range of ground sample distance or off-nadir angle values. More information about order parameters is provided on the Tasking order page.

Running a feasibility check

Once you’ve set tasking parameters you can run a feasibility check and a price estimation by clicking on “Check feasibility”. You don’t pay anything at this stage.

If the tasking order is feasible, you will see the word “Feasible” in yellow in the sidebar along with the price, current credit limit and a button to submit a tasking order. If not, you will be prompted to amend your request.

Selecting catalog withholds

Before placing an order, you can specify if you want to withhold an image from the catalog for a selected period of time. You can see available options that are specified in your contract and check the price that is associated with each of the options.

Placing an order

As soon as you click “Submit for Tasking”, the tasking order is placed. SatVu platform will deduct money from your account but payment won’t be taken until an order is successfully delivered.

You can either stay on the Tasking page and place more tasking orders or check the status of your order on the Orders page.

Assured priority tasking product

The process of creating an assured priority tasking product consists of the following steps:

  1. Provide the location of the tasking order
  2. Choose the satellite pass and retrieve the price
  3. Place an order

Providing location

This step works the same way as it does in the standard priority tasking product. You can use the map to browse to the desired location of the tasking order or the geocoding component and type an address in the top left input field. A tasking order requires a point geometry, so you will need to draw the point of interest. For that, hover on the pencil icon and select the point geometry object.

Exploring available passes

Once you’ve provided geometry, you can see information about available passes over this area. They are grouped by a day based on the start of the estimated time frame.

Each pass has information about the estimated time frame, off-nadir angle and ground sample distance values. We also provide information about the price for the tasking order.

Tracking orders and downloading data

The Orders page gives you an overview of all orders placed under a given contract. You can filter by catalog and tasking orders. Statuses are updated automatically and you can have multiple action items based on them:

  • While the order has the status Staged, you are able to cancel the order. More information is available under Tasking order.
  • As soon as the tasking order is fulfilled, the Download button becomes active.

The Orders page has two main views for discovering orders: list view and split view.

While the list view provides information about tasking orders and their parameters, the split view also enables exploring orders on the map. That helps locate the order and retrieve information about its status.
